June 30, 2008

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— The lack of a controlled environment springs from many external causes. Powerful storms, building damage, and loss of electricity, however, aren’t the only reasons that buildings require temporary heating or cooling. The air-handling units at a medical laboratory in Tallahassee, Fla., for example, needed to be completely refurbished — something that couldn’t be done while the system was in operation. Unfortunately, the building functioned as a medical testing laboratory, and the facility couldn’t operate without temperature control for the two weeks that the units would be down.

“The challenge was to provide clean, 68-70˚F air to the lab, which operates 24/7,” said Tim Hebert, president of Air Purification Specialists, an indoor environmental quality consulting and remediation service company with headquarters in Pavo, Ga. “Medical testing of human specimens performed in the lab required us to provide dependable, uninterrupted cooling to the area and stay within fairly tight temperature specs.”

To solve the problem, Hebert designed an environmental engineering control that allowed the company to shift the cooling load over to auxiliary equipment during the two-week renovation of the main HVAC system.

“Atlas Sales & Rentals Inc. was able to provide a 12-ton portable air conditioning unit that met all our requirements,” noted Hebert.

Using a professional window company, Hebert had one windowpane removed and then replaced it with an exact fitting manifold equipped with two 12-inch supply holes. The supply holes came complete with standard tab collars screwed in place and two 12-inch returns mounted in the same manner. Non-sweating, heavy-duty flexible duct was used on the outside, and rollout plastic duct was used indoors. The temporary ducting was suspended from the acoustical ceiling grid, and slits were cut into the ducting at appropriate locations to maintain proper airflow of conditioned air through the space. “This design allowed us to maintain security of the facility, while enabling us to bring in supply air lines and tie in the return air exhaust as well,” said Hebert. “It worked flawlessly, and the portable air conditioning equipment worked great, meeting all our requirements.”

by Barb Checket-Hanks
June 30, 2008

The trends in portable cooling are similar to those seen in other sectors of the HVAC markets: energy usage reduction strategies under the green umbrella; more sophisticated controls for operation and service ease; and everything possible to help contractors keep their customers happy.

This, in turn, adds to the increasing influx of portable HVAC units in the U.S. air conditioning market. “What is probably changing more drastically than the equipment itself is overall acceptance by the marketplace,” said Clark Michel, vice president, Atlas Sales and Rentals Inc.

“Portable air conditioners are much more accepted than they were 10 or 15 years ago as a reliable source of cooling, not only for emergencies but also for permanent applications such as primary cooling in data centers.”

Atlas Sales and Rentals is a Preferred MovinCool distributor and a GSA-Certified MAS contractor.

TODAY’S APPLICATIONS
“Any size contractor can benefit,” from using portable a/c, said Garth Tagge, national sales manager for manufacturer Spot Coolers Portable Air Conditioning. “We do business with the biggest mechanical contractors in the U.S., as well as with progressive mom and pop shops everywhere. However, commercial and industrial contractors (versus residential contractors) are the ones who use us. Only an occasional residential contractor uses us, and that’s typically if they do some percentage of light commercial or commercial work.”

When it comes to portable units to provide supplemental cooling in computer rooms, “The contractor rents the product from us while he shuts down the dedicated computer room or equipment room a/c to replace it, service it, repair it, or perform some preventive maintenance to it,” said Tagge. “The portable a/c allows the contractor to work on the a/c unit while the computer, server, or other type of equipment is kept up and running (versus shutting the customer’s equipment down due to no air).

Contractors can also purchase the equipment outright, to have on hand as a dedicated a/c system for small- to medium-sized server rooms, computer rooms, copy rooms, etc. “Because our systems are portable, the installation costs are often much less than that required of small dedicated a/c systems, which must be installed in the ceiling or wall,” said Tagge.

“The installation costs of these systems can often be much more than the equipment cost,” he continued. “The contractor can sell the portable as a lower cost alternative to an installed system to his customers that are price sensitive.

“In addition, an installed a/c system typically becomes a leasehold improvement in rented space and remains with the landlord should the tenant leave. The portable, if used as a dedicated a/c unit, can be taken to a new site or relocated in the existing site easily, should equipment rooms move or expand because it is not affixed to the building and therefore not the landlord’s property.”

Units also can be used to supplement an existing a/c system, such as an office building, hospital, nursing home, etc., that has maxed out its a/c system capacity due to internal loads. “They often use spot coolers to supplement their a/c, particularly during heat waves,” said Tagge. “Portables are rented and spaced out to provide localized cooling and airflow on patients, tenants, elderly, etc.”

In emergency situations, units are rented out for temporary and emergency cooling issues. “These constantly arise,” said Tagge. However, “the term tends to be a little shorter in response to a bad economy. For instance, the customer may return units a little sooner to help defray costs.” The economy has also affected the purchase of units for maintenance and engineering department tool cribs, for quick response to emergency cooling needs.
GREEN AFTER HOURS
After-hours cooling is another application for portable units.

“One trend we are seeing is the use of portable air conditioners as a green solution for after-hours cooling,” said Michel. “When you need to use an office suite or meeting room during nights or weekends, a spot cooler allows you to turn off the building’s central system and just direct the cooling where you need it. The energy savings can be huge.

“The same logic applies when facilities close down for summer vacations or holidays and still need to keep server rooms cool,” he continued. “The week between Christmas and New Year’s has become one of the busiest of the year for portable cooling companies as a result.”

The use of more sophisticated controls in these systems is helping to increase their applications in multiple trends. “There is a trend toward more sophisticated programmable controls that help to regulate temperature and maximize energy efficiency,” said Michel.

“Spot coolers are also edging up in capacity,” he added. “Five tons used to be the upper limit, but now we are seeing some bigger portables that enable customers to cool larger areas using fewer units.”

Portable air conditioning can benefit a smart HVAC contractor, he said, by simply keeping the customer happy. “Delivering emergency cooling during a failure of the central HVAC system is the most obvious example, but it’s not just about emergencies anymore.

“If a new HVAC installation is running behind schedule, let’s say because a part is delayed, portable air conditioning can fill the gap and keep your customer cool — both literally and figuratively,” said Michel.

“If you are shutting down an existing system for renovation or service, portable cooling can be brought in on a planned basis during shutdown. Or, if your customer has increased cooling loads by adding equipment or floor space, the permanent addition of portable cooling can be a cost-effective choice. These are the kinds of smart solutions we hear about from contractors.”

Key applications include hospitals, data center server rooms, and all types of facilities using backup generator 115-volt circuitry, which will not power their regular air conditioning systems.

The SAC2411 combines the convenience of 115-volt power with a high-capacity unit that takes up minimal space, measuring just 20” W x 42” L x 42.5” H. It can save on operating and purchase or rental costs because a single 2-ton unit can do the job of two competitive 1-ton coolers. The unit is ETL and CETL listed to UL and CSA standards, and all KwiKool models are manufactured in the U.S.A.

The SAC2411 2-ton portable air conditioner is available from Atlas for rental or purchase and may be used for primary, supplemental or emergency cooling. Atlas offers a full line of portable cooling solutions from KwiKool, including both air-cooled and water-cooled models to fit a wide range of standard and special applications.

It is a well-known fact that computers don’t do well in high temperature conditions – and neither do customers. “We had about 75 of each in our facility when the air conditioning went down just before Memorial Day weekend,” says Conrad Rowe, manager of Allied Hot Spot in Jacksonville, Florida. “With the help of Atlas Sales & Rentals, Inc., we were able to save the weekend by using portable air conditioners to cool down the place.”

Owned by Allied Veterans of the World, a nonprofit service organization in which veterans help other veterans through fund-raising programs, Allied Hot Spot is a “24/7” Internet café where customers can come just to surf the web or, more popularly, to play sweepstakes games on the computers. Proceeds are used by the Allied Veterans group to fund a variety of charitable causes.

After the 20+-year-old wall-mounted air conditioning system failed on May 22, the indoor temperature at Allied Hot Spot was fast approaching 90 degrees. “Our equipment starts going down at about 85 degrees, and customers were leaving, so we needed to do something quickly,” notes Rowe, adding: “This is not the kind of ‘hot spot’ we want to be!”

Rowe called his air conditioning contractor, Tropic Air, who said it would not be possible to repair the system until after the holiday weekend. He referred Rowe to the local office of Atlas Sales & Rentals, a leading distributor of portable cooling equipment. The Jacksonville office manager arranged for same-day delivery of three 1.5-ton portable air conditioners to provide the needed cooling requirements. “Atlas brought the units over quickly, rolled them in, connected them to our power source and we were back in business! It was as simple as that,” says Rowe.

The three portable units delivered sufficient cooling to the main computer area and a small adjacent lounge until Memorial Day, when the weather outside grew hotter and the crowd inside grew larger. “Indoor temperatures were approaching 80 degrees, so we were once again outside the comfort zone,” says Rowe. “I called Atlas to see if they could bring an additional unit. Even though it was a holiday, they arrived within a couple of hours and installed the fourth spot cooler.” He concludes: “I was very pleased with their services.”

Application: Temporary Cooling – Construction SitePortable Air Conditioners Enhance Safety, Productivity at Church Construction SiteWhen Fickling Construction (Jacksonville, Florida) took on the task of building a 64,000 sq ft addition to the North Jacksonville Baptist Church, the general contracting firm wanted to find a way to assure the safety and comfort of its construction crews in hot and humid conditions. “The second story of the addition has a large, peaked picture window that we installed early in the construction process to keep the building watertight, and the heat gain from the glass is enormous,” reports Fickling project manager Ken Grula. “The use of two 12-ton portable air conditioners, supplied by Atlas Sales & Rentals, Inc., has provided us with a quick and effective solution until the permanent air handling system is up and running.”

Grula was familiar with portable or “spot” coolers but had not previously seen them used on construction sites. “In the Florida climate, working inside a sealed building with no air conditioning is not just a comfort issue, it is really a question of human health and safety,” he notes. “The temporary air conditioners have made a big difference to our crew by delivering a constant flow of cool, dry, climate-controlled air. It is a definite morale booster – and when people have a comfortable working environment, it is a fact that they work faster and better.”

Keeping crews cool is not the only issue. “By reducing humidity, the spot coolers help to speed certain tasks such as drywall finishing, because spackle dries more quickly in the lower-humidity conditions,” Grula says. “Also, since the units are portable, they can be wheeled to different areas as construction progresses to deliver cooling where it is most needed. We are finding it to be a very flexible solution.”

Grula researched portable air conditioning products on the Internet and contacted two or three companies who have local offices near the church. “The manager of the Atlas branch office in Jacksonville was helpful in recommending the most economical solution for the job. We have rented the units on a monthly basis and expect to use them for about two months.”

The dual units provide enough capacity to cool the site more efficiently than several smaller air conditioners, while also giving Fickling the ability to cool four different areas at one time through the 12” insulated 50-ft-long flexible hoses (two per unit). The 12-ton model (Atlas Model 12T32) was chosen because of its proven record of durability in harsh environments. In this situation, the units are subjected to high levels of drywall dust as well as other construction-generated dust. The extra-large evaporator and condenser coils and the 2”-deep filters are easily accessible for cleaning with an air hose or low-pressure water. The units also contain safety controls to ensure shutdown if the power loses phase or if anything happens to block airflow across the coils. The condenser hot air is exhausted outside via a straight stack through the roof access on one unit and through an elbow and out a window on the other.

North Jacksonville Baptist Church is a large and well-known institution. When the new church addition is completed, the 64,000-sq ft space will house administrative offices, classrooms and a 1,000-seat dining hall with kitchen.

Will factor into quotes for future projects

Grula has become a believer in portable cooling on construction sites and says he will try to factor one or more units into the price when quoting on future jobs. “Although we can’t fully quantify the payback, we know that the units serve an important function by helping us to improve comfort, productivity and quality,” he summarizes.

Winter or summer, computer servers generate enormous quantities of heat. Portable air conditioners are a great way to meet the special requirements of server or telecom rooms and help keep critical equipment online. They are ideal for:
• Small server rooms and telecommunications closets that do not have dedicated cooling systems;

• Backup protection for large data centers that are already equipped with specialized cooling;

• Supplemental cooling for growing operations where the primary system is no longer adequate.

A portable air conditioning unit used in a permanent server room application typically costs only 20-30% as much as a non-portable system of similar capacity, while still performing the required function. Click here to read about an Atlas customer who saved more than 80% by specifying a 5-ton portable cooling unit for their server room in place of rooftop equipment!

Portable or “spot” coolers can be installed temporarily or permanently, rented or purchased, and easily moved to a different area to accommodate design changes or increased heat loads.

A leading distributor of portable cooling equipment for 30 years, Atlas has a fast-growing network of full-servicelocations to serve customers across the country. Portable cooling equipment at the venue can make the difference between success and failure. So be sure to plan ahead and reserve your equipment ahead of the summer rush!

Atlas Sales & Rentals, Inc. has been an expert in portable air conditioning for 30 years. One of our specialists can help you evaluate:

Open vs. enclosed location: Will the event be held in a fully enclosed tent, warehouse or other sealed area? Or will be it on an open space such as a lawn, courtyard or covered carport?

Power supply: Will you draw electricity from an adjacent building or home, and if so, what type of power? If available power will not be enough for adequate cooling, plan to rent a generator if the budget allows.

Heat load: What time of day will the event take place? What are the average temperatures in the area? How many people will occupy the space? Will they be seated or engaged in strenuous activity? Will there be spotlights or heat-generating equipment?

Let Atlas walk you through the decision-making process and help you determine the best cooling equipment for your needs. We have full-service locations to serve customers across the country.
